Larry Craig Spoof Ad is an Animal Rights Con, Says Consumer Group

Washington – A TV advertising spoof of Senator Larry Craig hitting the airwaves tomorrow is the work of deceptive animal rights activists, the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom said today. The misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) — an animal rights group whose membership is actually 96 percent physician-free — is running the ad, which complains about lawmakers who voted to include meat in school lunches through this year’s Farm Bill.

“PCRM is nothing more than a bunch of save-the-chickens extremists,” said Center for Consumer Freedom Director of Research David Martosko, “Like everything PCRM does, this latest ad is deceptive propaganda. Congress, not the animal rights movement, should be setting nutrition policy.”

Newsweek and The New York Times have exposed PCRM as the quasi-medical propaganda arm of the animal rights movement. Although the group portrays itself as a mainstream medical organization with broad public support, more than two-thirds of its budget comes from wealthy vegan activist Nanci Alexander — the founding president of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida.

To date, PCRM has received over $1.3 million from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Until 2006, PCRM’s president (a non-practicing psychiatrist) was also president of the PETA Foundation.

Martosko added: “This phony Physicians Committee certainly chose a subject it knows something about: people who hide their true nature from the public. PCRM has been pretending to be a mainstream medical charity for years. But it’s really just PETA in a lab coat.”
