Full-Page Ad in Roll Call and Politico Links Humane Society of the U.S. to Unsavory Controversies

Washington, D.C. – Today HumaneWatch.org, a project of the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), ran a full-page ad in Roll Call and Politico detailing the controversies and scandals that surround the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and its CEO Wayne Pacelle.

The ad shows “Wayne’s World,” featuring Pacelle in the middle of the page linking him to several issues dogging the HSUS. The ad highlights:

  • HSUS’s failure to significantly share a portion of its multi-million dollar budget with local hands-on pet shelters. The ad points to the measly 1 percent of its budget that HSUS shared with pet shelters in 2011, while in the same year it had $37 million socked away in hedge funds.
  • HSUS’s deceptive fundraising tactics, which use the images of sad-looking cats and dogs in cages to dupe America’s pet lovers into supporting the animal liberation group’s PETA-like agenda.
  • The group’s connection to unsavory characters such as convicted dogfighter Michael Vick and disgraced IRS official Lois Lerner, who is stonewalling a Congressional request for an investigation into HSUS.
  • The “D” grade HSUS receives from the American Institute of Philanthropy.
  • Pacelle’s signature on a check that was used in connection with an alleged witness-payment scheme in an ongoing federal racketeering lawsuit against HSUS and two of its lawyers.

“The Humane Society of the U.S. is a humane society in name only,” said Will Coggin, Senior Research Analyst at CCF. “Wayne Pacelle and his animal liberation group’s tangled web of scandals and shady dealings should raise more than an eyebrow or two. The group unabashedly misleads the public into believing it supports America’s pet shelters, but instead misuses donor money to further its PETA-like vegan agenda.”
