Terrorists 'By Any Definition'

On February 12, the U.S. House convened a hearing on eco-terrorism -- and environmental and animal rights extremists vow "direct action by any means necessary." In so doing, Congress is shining harsh light on these brothers-in-arms with America's worst enemies, and Americans must pay attention. As FBI special agent David Szady, now U.S. Counterintelligence Executive, put it: ''Make no mistake about it, by any sense or any definition, [The Earth Liberation Front] is a true domestic-terrorism group.''

"Even as Americans came to realize the very real threat international terrorism poses to themselves and future American generations, the domestic Earth Liberation Front (ELF) was crowing about its own recent terrorist acts," The Heartland Institute's James M. Taylor writes. "Not only does ELF take credit for dozens of acts of terrorism over recent years, but even in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks the group openly encourages and instructs other persons and groups contemplating acts of domestic terrorism":

  • Setting off time bombs and incendiary devices.
  • Destroying research facilities that save lives.
  • Running online eco-terror "training camps."
  • Teaching "activists" all about "Setting Fires With Electrical Timers."
  • Disseminating "how-to" manuals on "blockading tactics," "thievery and trespassing," "covert direct action," and even sinking ships.
  • Taking credit for 137 "actions" in 2001 alone.
  • "A domestic version of al-Qaida… [they] might even be your neighbor or a distant cousin."
