American Heart Association Gives Alcohol Consumption Two Glasses Up

The American Heart Association's (AHA) vice-chair of nutrition recommends daily alcohol consumption in an MSNBC.com article entitled "10 foods to eat each week." Along with daily servings of dairy products, veggies, and so forth, the AHA suggests one drink a day for woman, and two for men.

The American Heart Association has made its support of sensible drinking very clear. The group suggests that moderate consumption saves 80,000 lives annually. Despite the well-known health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption, and this staggering 80,000 figure, far too many opinion makers believe the truth should be hushed up. So the AHA has done yeoman service by promoting alcohol's salutary health effects on a popular news website.

Fearful of the increasing awareness of alcohol's health benefits, and taking advantage of budget deficits, neo-prohibitionist forces are proposing alcohol tax increases all over the country. But one brewer isn't taking tax hikes lying down. He's staging a mock Boston Tea Party by dressing up as Benjamin Franklin and dumping a few kegs of his "First Amendment Beer" into the Great Salt Lake.

Utah State Senator Michael Waddoups doesn't find such antics very funny. "He's an opportunist trying to get free advertising," the Senator complains. "It doesn't seem fair to the other [beer brands], but who cares. I want all of them to quit drinking."

The Senator's candor is refreshing. It's good to see him admit that tax hikes are fashioned to get people to "quit drinking."

    Mothers Against Drunk Driving
    Background | Quotes | Financials
MADD has managed to artificially enlarge the societal problem of drunk driving by continuously expanding the parameters of the “drinking driving problem.” Even though the real drunk driving problem has been reduced to a relatively small group of incorrigible “hard-core” offenders, MADD continues to intensify its focus on responsible adults. read more here »
