The Common Sense Diet

Congratulations to Tyler of 344pounds.com for his remarkable success in losing 100 pounds in six months. How did he do it? Tyler’s weight loss miracle didn’t happen by switching to an all-organic, low-carb, trans fat-free, “natural,” or vegetarian diet. Diet pills don’t get the credit, either. In fact, Tyler’s secret to losing all those pounds isn’t much of a secret at all. It’s good-old-fashioned exercise and moderation.
This morning, Tyler shared a few thoughts on weight loss gimmicks with readers of the Consumerist blog:

The thing I hated about past diets is that they’re [an] all or nothing thing. Diets give you one cheat meal a week and the rest of the time it’s "no sugar" or "no carbs" or some other nonsense. I don’t want to pass up going out for pizza with the family on Friday nights for the rest of my life because of a diet. Diets are designed to restrict your life, which is why I didn’t lose 100 pounds on a diet. In fact, it was lost by eating cheeseburgers, fries, and bacon on a weekly basis – albeit in moderation.

This is a great example of why taxing or banning “junk” foods won’t solve the obesity problem: Taking away Americans’ favorite foods doesn’t motivate them to hit the gym.
We’ve always agreed with the view that “you can’t get buff if you’re on your duff,” and there are plenty of studies to support this simple theory. Tyler is living proof that, when it comes to losing weight, common sense really is the best practice.
