Hog wild (Part II)
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports that the Humane Society of the United States' (HSUS') petition drive to extend "human rights" to Florida hogs only manages to fool some of the people, some of the time. HSUS senior vice president Wayne Pacelle told the Herald-Tribune that Florida is the first target for such a measure because of the ease of changing the state's constitution. But some Floridians say that animal rights movement's plan to amend the state constitution rather than lobby for new laws amounts to a cheap political end-run. "Everybody who can't get something through the Legislature is going to start trying to get it on the constitution," said one farmer. Certain that the Florida campaign is just a trial balloon for things to come, a Florida Pork Producers executive told reporters that "as far as pig farming is concerned, Florida isn't even a pimple on an elephant's butt compared to North Carolina and other places."
