HSUS is behind Florida animal-rights petition drive

The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch notes in an editorial that the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is behind a petition drive in Florida that could result in a constitutional amendment extending human rights to farm animals (see Consumer Freedom headline "Pig in a Poke" from July 6th). The Dispatch writes: "The Florida Farm Bureau Federation, which opposes the constitutional change, thinks the Humane Society has a larger goal in mind than merely looking out for sows in the Sunshine State. If the pregnant pig amendment passes constitutional muster, the federation fears, it could be used to promote similar accommodations in other states."
