“Golden Carrot” School Lunch Awards Come With Animal-Rights Strings Attached
Phony “Physicians Committee” Has Ties To PETA, Few Doctors
Washington, DC – This week the misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) awarded “Golden Carrot” prizes to school cafeterias in Poughkeepsie, NY; Cincinnati, OH; Santa Barbara, CA; and Montpelier, VT for emphasizing meat- and dairy-free menu items. While PCRM claims to be interested in “improving the healthfulness of school lunches,” the group is actually advancing a hidden animal-rights agenda which seeks to remove all meat, dairy, seafood, and eggs from Americans’ diets.
For the benefit of school nutrition directors, the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom is highlighting little-known facts about the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and its connections to the radical animal rights movement:
• Less than 5 percent of PCRM’s members are actual physicians.
• PCRM seeks to stop medical research that requires the use of animals, and to remove meat and dairy foods from our diet by demonizing that food as “unhealthy.” People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has already steered more than $1.3 million to PCRM. Animal People News notes that PETA and PCRM are so closely connected that they should be considered “a single fundraising unit.”
• PCRM discourages Americans from making donations to respected health charities like the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the American Red Cross, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, and the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation—solely because they support research that requires the use of animals.
• The American Medical Association (AMA) has called PCRM a “fringe organization” that uses “unethical tactics” and is “interested in perverting medical science.” The AMA has also condemned PCRM for supporting “a campaign of misinformation against important animal research of AIDS.”
“Like its ally PETA, this phony ‘Physicians Committee’ will stop at nothing to push its animal-rights agenda,” said Center for Consumer Freedom director of research David Martosko. “PCRM’s president has claimed that milk is an instrument of child abuse, and says cheese is ‘morphine on a cracker.’ Schools who don’t want to take nutrition advice from PETA should decline these awards. Following the federal government’s dietary requirements is hard enough. Nobody should have to deal with animal-rights activists who pose as mainstream health experts.”
