Legislating In What We Eat

Calling obesity “a full blown health crisis and truly a national epidemic,” Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) promoted her “Lifelong Improvements in Food and Exercise Act” at a press conference last Thursday. Norton said “increasingly delicious and highly advertised retail and restaurant food” and “fat-saturated fast food” were among the biggest culprits. “The underlying theme of the bill is that unhealthy lifestyles have gained such a foothold in every part of the country that only a major national intervention can affect existing runaway patterns in time,” said Norton. The proposed bill would require the Centers for Disease Control to launch a comprehensive nationwide education program to combat obesity.
