The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reports that meat producers can begin irradiating ground beef tomorrow, greatly reducing the risk of meat contamination. (“Feeding on controversy,” 2/20/00, No link available.) Even though it concedes irradiation generally could save “thousands” of lives each year, the hypocritical nannies at the Center for Science in the Public Interest oppose it. CSPI president Michael Jacobsen says irradiation can “result in taste and nutritional changes to red meat,” claims clearly refuted by the World Health Organization and the American Dietetic Association.
