What People Eat & Drink Is Their Own Business

Kudos to The Ottawa Citizen for opposing a fat tax on high-calorie foods. The paper says, “[W]e oppose a special tax on food that health-care bureaucrats deem bad for us. This is government by extortion… Governments that try to legislate or regulate behavior are effectively telling people that they aren’t sufficiently mature to be treated as responsible, self-ordering citizens. Sin taxes are an example of this contempt. The only justifiable role for a genuinely enlightened government in dealing with the obesity ‘crisis’ is one of example and education.”
