‘U.S. mad cow’ myth kept alive by veggie activists

Terry Singeltary, an anti-meat activist who believes that the U.S. government is covering up the existence of mad cow disease in America,
is being treated like Deep Throat in a recent Houston Chronicle article. The Chronicle writes that Singeltary “might not be so zealous in getting the word out [about mad cow] if he weren’t convinced that someone is covering up the truth.”

Interestingly, Singeltary serves as the moderator for what has arguably become the Internet’s longest sustained rant on the subject of mad cow disease. And the web site where he plies his trade is owned by Howard Lyman, a long-time anti-meat activist and president of Earthsave International. Lyman’s biggest claim to fame is his 1996 appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show, during which he said that mad cow disease would “make AIDS look like the common cold.”
