Yesterday the circus was in town — in the small Upper-Peninsula Michigan town of Munising — and Hero-of-the-Day honors go to Mayor Rod Desjardins. After receiving a propaganda-laden anti-circus letter from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Desjardins did exactly what any self-respecting politician running for higher office should do: He ignored it. Asked by the Munising Mining Journal for a comment, Mayor Desjardins put PETA’s circus-hating oddballs in their place, calling them “radical extremists with a bizarre philosophy that considers the life of an insect equal to the life of a human being … The circus is classic American entertainment suitable for the whole family and I intend to take my kids to the show.”
