National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week (Nov. 1-7) recognizes the lifesaving work of local animal shelters and rescue groups. There’s an easy way we can help the furry friends in our community that readers may not be aware of.
Most people don’t know that the Humane Society of the United States is not affiliated with local humane societies, nor is the ASPCA affiliated with local SPCAs. In fact, HSUS gives just 1 percent of the money it raises to local pet shelters and doesn’t operate a single pet shelter of its own. A lot of money is given to national groups that people think trickles down locally, but it actually doesn’t.
That’s why participants in National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week should avoid donating to HSUS. Instead, animal lovers should celebrate this week by volunteering or giving directly to their local humane society, pet shelter or rescue group.
