The claim that food manufacturers are somehow manipulating government “serving size” standards to “make more money” pushes the bizarre meter to new levels (May 12 article, “Size creep, label confusion foil calorie-counters”). This New York Times article presumes that people are incapable of self-control when it comes to food, and that the federal government must step in – a frightening prospect. But that is what is being planned. The upcoming National Nutrition Summit has an agenda packed with intrusive, civil liberty-bending ideas about how the federal government should modify an individual’s food choices.
If Americans are incapable of eating only one cookie because they are sold in packages of two, we have a far greater problem than obesity.
