If the HSUS [Humane Society of the United States] really has a network of 23,000 members in every congressional district, why was President Wayne Pacelle personally knocking on California doors last week? (“Puppy Power: How Humane Society Gets the Vote Out,” page one, Nov. 7).
Mr. Pacelle’s desire to unseat Rep. Richard Pombo, along with every non-vegetarian member of Congress, is understandable. It’s typical of vegan absolutists pounding the pavement in non-leather shoes. But where was his army of peasants with pitchforks?
I suspect that Mr. Pacelle’s group has a much smaller and less powerful grassroots footprint than it advertises.
