I would like to correct some misleading information in a recent letter by Susan Levin. [“Facts About Farm Bill,” November 7]

Levin points out the obvious in observing beef and dairy lobbyists’ attachment to subsidies for feed crops. But she was less forthcoming about the reasons for her own organization’s bias against meat producers and dairy farmers.

The misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is less interested in Americans’ health than in the “rights” of farm animals. PCRM is an animal rights group. It has received over $1.3 million from PETA. More than two-thirds of PCRM’s budget currently comes from the wealthy founder of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida. And its president was, until last year, also president of The PETA Foundation.

The federal Farm Bill is complicated enough. If save-the-chickens activists want a seat at the table, the least they can do is be honest about their motives.
